MOTHERS REMEMBERING

MOTHERS REMEMBERING
They spoke of children,
Their’s, children of their children,
Girl children climbing trees, and sledding,
Going to school.

I sat among mothers in late afternoon sun,
The warmth of late afternoon sun,
The warmth of mothers, remembering.

LOOK BOTH WAYS

LOOK BOTH WAYS
Look both ways,
Constantinople, Santa Helena,
One thread ties all,
Before the fouling,
Popes’ calendars,
Kings’ scribes,
Nicea,
Three hundred bishops gathered ’round Constantine to sanctify imperialism,
In the name of Christ, Jesus of Nazareth, pagan,
Nicea, on to the Crusades,
Colonies,
Dominion,
Subjugation,
Exploitation,
What the birds are singing,
What the stars are saying.
